Getting ready for your iron infusion? Here's what to do. Stay well hydrated and eat something before you come, unless your clinic says otherwise. Bring a list of the medicines you take, and any allergies. Wear a top with sleeves that roll up easily, and ask your clinic how long to plan for. Tell the nurse right away if you feel unwell during the infusion. Know your numbers. Bring them to your doctor.

Before you come

  • Eat something and drink water before your appointment, unless your clinic tells you otherwise.
  • Take your usual medicines, unless your clinic says otherwise. Ask whether to pause iron pills.
  • Bring a list of the medicines you take and any allergies.
  • Wear a top with sleeves that roll up, and bring water, a snack and something to read.
  • Ask your clinic how long to plan for. The drip is often shorter than the visit because you are usually watched for a short time afterwards.

During the infusion

Tell the nurse before you start if you're pregnant, have asthma or significant allergies, or have reacted to iron before. Say so right away if your arm burns or swells, or you feel itchy, dizzy or short of breath.
